Where to send your money
While composing and typing the previous post I had the television on for a bit of background noise. During the advertising breaks I was astounded that there were no fewer than 15 adverts begging me to send my money to one charity or another. I had request for between £2 and £18 per month to help a variety of causes.
THIS REALLY IRRITATES ME!!!
I personally donate to three charities every year, namely the London Air Ambulance, Great Ormond Street Hospital & the Royal British Legion. I do this for the following reasons:-
Air Ambulance:- A vital service in London. Where a land ambulance can take up to 40 minutes to reach a casualty, the LAA can reach them in 12. I have seen these guys in action and they really make a difference.
Great Ormond Street Hospital:- When my stepson was younger, he suffered from a condition called Nephrotic Syndrome. This is an illness that effects the function of the kidneys and led to several visits to both Great Ormond Street and our local hospital. GOSH deal specifically with children suffering from both debilitating and in some cases, untreatable illness and really make the whole experience as painless as possible.
Royal British Legion:- The charity charged with looking after all of the servicemen, both serving and retired that have fought for the great country we live in. Most people buy a poppy in the run up to Rememberance Sunday, this revenue contributes to the huge costs associated with the work the legion does but, there is a year round need for support to allow these brave, proud servicemen and women to have someone to turn to when it is needed.
My point in this post is, When was the last time you saw any of these charities advertising on television?? At the most, in the past 6 months, I have only seen people out doing street collections, or people participating in fun runs, marathons and other events to raise money for these worthwhile causes.
All I ask is one thing………Next time you consider donating to charity, or participating in one of the several phone polls and competitons you see on the TV every day, please consider instead, visiting the websites below and spending your money on a more worthwhile pursuit.
